LAUSD’s Proposed 2021-2022 School Year Calendar

After the Los Angeles Unified School District’s proposal to add additional instructional days to the coming school year gained little support from parents and teachers, the district has now scrapped its proposal to provide the extra days. Governor Newsom had pushed for 10 additional days to be added, six for students and an additional four for professional development. LAUSD recently released a proposed school calendar for the coming year, see below, with classes beginning August 17, 2021, and continuing through June 13, 2022, that retains 180 days of instruction.

LAist reports that the District will allow individual schools to expand their school year and will fund those who do so based on need. After withdrawing the plan for a district-wide extension to the school year, the District released a memo outlining a new plan to make additional funding available as an incentive for schools to provide extra instruction for students who need more attention following the year away from campus.

“To complement the proposed Board action to approve the 2021-2022 Instructional Calendar with the traditional 180 days of instruction, a process will provide funding incentives for each school to add optional instructional days/time for students in need of additional instruction and additional days/time for professional development to transform the student-teacher interaction in the classroom based on localized needs.”

The proposed schedule is below, and Vanaman German LLP will continue to monitor updates from LAUSD.
